Jieț Gorge – trip in the ice world

In early February 2015 we decided to go skiing at the newest ski resort in Romania: Transalpina Ski Resort (SRT). It was not our first time here since we also came here in the opening season: 2012/2013 and we loved it 🙂

Not long after we took our skiing gear and headed towards Petroșani. To get to SRT you need to turn left on DN 7A road in Petroșani. DN 7A should be a national road so it should be in pretty good shape. It is not the case with this road: it’s full of potholes and has portions with no tarmac. The state of the road is not really the point here but we want you to know what you should expect 🙂 The good news regarding this road is that it crosses the Jieț Gorges immediately after you exit Petroșani.

These gorges were formed by the Jieț river making its way through the Parâng Mountains on one side and Șureanu Mountains on the other. The scenery is spectacular due to the steep slopes on each side and the heights of the mountain walls. All this area is part of the Jieț Gorges Natural Reservation.

The most spectacular part of the gorges is almost 5 km long. Here the mountains sides are very steep and very high. The colour of the rocks is amazing and you can see for yourself the different types of rock which make up the mountain.

During winter these gorges are even more spectacular. An astonishing phenomenon is happening: the snow and the tens of small creeks high up the mountain melt during the day and frost during the night. The result is very beautiful since all the mountains sides are covered in a continuous ice curtain which contains huge icicles, some over 5 meters high.

The sight is breathtaking and there’s a certain period when you need to come in order to see this beautiful performance offered by nature. I’ll let you enjoy with some more photos you can find below 🙂
