The Făgăraș Citadel

The summer of 2015 was very productive for us since we got to visit a lot of places. We only managed to tell you about two of them until now: Padina Fest and 7 Ladders Canyon. Today we’ll tell you about a very beautiful citadel which is a must-see: Făgăraș Citadel.

I don’t know how we managed to “avoid” this place for so many years. Many times we were quite close to it but never found the time to visit it. What fools we were! :)) This place is so impressive that Huffington Post put it o second place in a top of the most beautiful castles around the world.
You’ll find this beautiful citadel in Făgăraș city, on the E68/DN1 highway between Sibiu and Brașov. It’s right in the center of the city so you won’t have to make any detours to visit it. So there’s no reason for you not to see it. Hopefully the pictures will convince you to come here and if not we’ll throw in a few things about what we loved here 🙂
Our favourite thing about this citadel is that it’s completely surrounded by water. It’s trully amazing, just like the ones in movies. We pass a beautiful wooden gate and enter the courtyard. The windows facing the courtyard have beautiful simple, yet elegant, surrounding architectural details. Also facing the courtyard you can see the beautiful columns built in Italian Rennaissance style of the loggies.

We walked around the courtyard and entered every room that was open to the public. We took a lot of pictures. We entered the base of the towers situated in the corners of the citadel. Some rooms are torture rooms, others are places where food was probably stored but they have one thing in common: they have been restored and look very good.
We stopped to visit Făgăraș Citadel on our way back home and we still had several hundred kilometers to go. Thus we were on a tight schedule and I couldn’t spend so much time absorbing all the details of this place, so this post here is just my general impression. I’m sure you can find different facts and details online 😀

Finally I reached the Throne Room (images below) which you can find upstairs. This impressive 50 meters long room has also been restored and is amazing. The furniture is massive wood. You can also see different kinds of armour here.
We spent quite a lot of time here in the Throne Room and in the rooms next to it. They all look beautiful. I was looking at my watch though and realised it’s quite late and I haven’t got the chance to see the exterior courtyard. It was fun and all but I have to cover the whole site in order to have something to show you guys 🙂
So I walk to the exterior courtyard and climb up on top of the walls. You get a nice view from up here and you can see the water surrounding the citadel. It’s quite beautiful. At that time there were several swans and two of them were black. You can see them in the last picture in this post 🙂
